“Expertly judged… An emotional roller-coaster of a play, brimming with drama and sentiment.” Stagebeauty.net
“This is excellent writing. It’s writing that understands how to be at once dramatic andreal; it does not attempt to overreach itself but there’s poetry in the lines. This is a well-crafted piece of new theatre.” Leeds List

Napoli opened at West Yorkshire Playhouse in May 2012 and Toured to Hull Truck Theatre, The Maltings Theatre Berwick, Darlington Arts Centre & Stephen Joseph theatre Scarborough

Bea has always felt like she never fitted in to her life in Yorkshire, never quite belonged. Then two days ago her Mum dropped a bombshell. Disorientated by this new truth, Bea flees to Italy to try and fit the pieces of her family’s story together.

Among the washing lines of the Napoli rooftops the hidden truths of three generations of women are revealed. The story stretches across history as the different eras collide from the war torn decisions of 1944 to the present day. Napoli is a story of truth, memory and forgiveness. It looks at heritage and identity and questions if ghosts of our family’s past shape our present and challenge our future.

As part of the Napoli project three free inter-generational workshops took place in each performance venue, reaching over 100 participants. Click on our OUTREACH page to find out more.
